The Kachelofen at Hummingbird
Kachelofen is a German word that means "tile oven" because they are traditionally faced with special ceramic tiles. We chose to stick with the earthen plaster we have used throughout our buildings, but we have yet to apply the finish plaster which will make this oven as beautiful as our interior walls.

Generally we have enough sun to heat the house until the end of September when we start making fires during cloudy periods. One fire each evening is usually sufficient to keep the main part of our home about 67 degrees*.
Two fires a day will maintain that temperature even if it drops into the 20's outside.

*With this radiant heating, surfaces (including people’s skin & clothing) are heated by infra-red rays. The air in between is not heated, so your "feel" warmer than the temperature would indicate.
